Positive Touch became incorporated on March 6, 1989 and became trademarked on November 1, 1989. We originated and popularized the on-site massage program in Richardson, Texas at the opening of the Whole Foods Market on Christmas 1988.
The massage program was so successful we had to open an office nearby. It was so beneficial to the market because people would sign up and wait 60 to 90 minutes for the excellent service we would provide. That, of course, helped to keep people in the store longer. They would look at the health care books, music and meditation tapes, greeting cards, and of course, all the food stuffs. Our reliability for doing great work, being on time and being considerate to our clients had given the new business a great reputation.
As a result of a tremendous following the business continued to grow. In our quest for knowledge and better techniques in massage, new concepts of mind-body integration were born. The resulting explorations from working the body with very light energy work to deep tissue structural work caused the "Breast Pillow," "Tummy Pillow" and "Neck Noogie" to be invented. The breast and tummy pillows just about invented themselves out of pure and simple need.

When my wife was in her seventh month of pregnancy with Jessica, we went to the beach. Mary Ellen could not lie face down on the beach blanket comfortably so I dug a hole in the sand underneath her tummy. That memory came back to me as I watched a future mom struggle on my table with the many pillows I had provided. The pillows were too cumbersome and totally inconsistant in size and resiliance. The tummy pillow developed out of those experiences.

The breast pillow was due to a client wanting deeper tissue work and some Shiatsu technique. However, she began to squirm as I applied pressure to her back. I asked if my pressure was too strong, and she answered, "No. I need for you to get those muscles to release." Pressing again caused the same response. I asked what her problem was since the pressure was not hard enough to elicit such a response, and she replied, "Quite frankly, Thomas, it's that time of the month!" Since she had been a client for about two years I knew she also had breast implants. I excused myself from the room and created a very crude, basic form of today's breast pillow model. Upon returning to my client, I asked her to position the pillow to fit. It offered her so much relief that we were both pleasantly surprised. Researching density, complementary fabrics and design, we improved the unit so much that our breast pillow is now widely used throughout the massage industry. We have also found it works well for people with knee injuries. Just slide the chest pillow under the tender knee and the pressure is off the sensitive area.
I wish I could take credit for the two tennis balls in a sock but it has been around for years. It is simple, brilliant and scientifically sound. It works with the principal of ischemic compression (knocking out tiny areas of focus), which is why it should only be used on a specific area for a maximum of 90 seconds. We have also found it very interesting that people would rather pay for a packaged product with a great name than to find that stray sock and put the tennis balls in there and make a knot. Our trademarked product is the "Neck Noogie" and comes in different sizes and colors.
